Shipping a mattress is never an easy task. You can rent a moving truck or large vehicle and transport the bed yourself, but this can be time-consuming and expensive. For many people, packing your mattress in a container and hiring movers for transport is the most cost-effective option.
There are two types of shipping to consider. Standard shipping involves movers packing the mattress, transporting it to the desired destination, and leaving the mattress on the doorstep.
White-Glove delivery providers will pack up the mattress, transport it and also unpack and set up the mattress after it reaches its destination.
Before transporting, however, you will need to package the mattress for shipping before the delivery company arrives.

Steps to Ship Your Mattress
Due to their weight and size, mattresses are more complicated and expensive to ship than most other items. But the main concern when shipping a mattress is the preparation to get it to the final destination safely.

Package a Mattress and Bed
When packaging a mattress and bed, you’ll probably not need a standard pallet. So, instead, you’ll want to package your pieces separately.
Strip and disassemble the bed completely. Before putting the mattress in a box, it needs to be protected. This process can be done by using a mattress encasement, also known as a mattress protector. You can also use shrink-wrap or bubble wrap.
For the next step, put the mattress in a cardboard box. If there are open spaces around the mattress, fill them up with packing foam. Once the mattress is secure, tape the box shut and make sure to secure all flaps and corners.

Wrap Your Headboards and Tie Bed Frames
The headboards and bed frames are the most fragile part of the shipment. Headboards and posts should each be covered in bubble-wrap or cardboard for protection against scuffs, scrapes, and other forms of damage. Other components like frame slats can be packaged together.
Remove all screws and other small components and store them in a container for safekeeping. Make sure to keep all the parts of the frame or foundation together as well so it is easier to reassemble everything later on.

Get Insurance
If the mattress outweighs the cost of shipping, you may want to consider insurance. The shipping company may offer insurance for an additional cost, or they could recommend a third-party provider.
Insurance will cover potentially expensive costs if the mattress is damaged, lost, or destroyed during transport. If there are any setbacks or issues while the mattress is en route to its destination, you should immediately contact the shipping company via phone or email.
