We wanted to bring you the latest on what we’re hearing concerning the ILA/USMX discussions and the potential strike at east and gulf coast ports from October 1st, 2024. Some ocean carriers are issuing notices on surcharges that will come into effect for shipments to and from the affected ports – here’s what we’ve seen so far:

Earlier this week, Alba joined a coalition of customs brokers, freight forwarders, and industry associations in signing a letter addressed to the White House outlining the extreme negative effect on supply chains, commerce, and economic activity that even a single day of stopped work at the ports would cause, and pleading for the administration to engage with the two groups and aid in the negotiation of a new deal that would keep the ports open.
We’re expecting additional announcements from USMX and the ILA on their positions during the final week before the work stoppage is planned to commence. We’re also closely watching ocean terminal announcements on demurrage and detention policies in the event of a labor disruption and recommend you do the same.
We’ll provide more updates as we have them.
